Kunal Khemu anchors this film with such rare maturity, he’s a revelation. Neatly directed by Rohit Jugraj, Superstar isn’t entirely unwatchable, in fact, by typical Hindi film standards, it’s an above average film with solid production values and a fantastic performance at its very core. What could have easily been a dramatic story about friendships and egos turns into that mundane tale about obligation and responsibility that you’ve seen several times before. Before he knows it, he’s up there dancing with the heroine, then beating up the bad guys, all the while the camera fixed on his close-up.īut the irony of the situation doesn’t escape him – the only reason he’s been picked out of a crowd to do this job is because he “looks” like the hero!ĭodging clichés and moving at a healthy pace, the screenplay of Superstar shifts gears and goes into predictable territory when it breaks for intermission, ultimately losing whatever ground was covered in the film’s speedy first half. However, his life changes overnight when he’s hired to be the duplicate for a young actor with whom he shares an uncanny resemblance. Who can’t relate to the neighbourhood kid who’s desperate to become a movie-star at any cost? In director Rohit Jugraj’s Superstar, Kunal Khemu plays that guy-next-door, who much to his father’s disappointment, chooses to spend his time struggling it out as a film extra in dusty studios, rather than take up a respectable nine-to-five job.Ī dreamer who sees himself reach for the stars like the Bachchans, the Khans and the Kapoors, reality sadly has a different plan for Kunal, who at best manages to land his few seconds of fame every time the camera lingers just long enough for him to be spotted in the crowd of background dancers, behind the hero.

The style and coolness she brings to the scene sent the theatre into a frenzy. And there is a surprising woman character, who channels her inner Bride (Kill Bill), slaughtering a group of men with some silverware. Fahadh Faasil’s screen presence promises us that there is something big afoot and keeps us invested in the story. Sethupathi is convincing as a hot-headed drug addict, who speaks so fast that his lips can’t keep pace with the speed of speech. He has given even minor characters moments to shine. But, Lokesh doesn’t burden Kamal with the herculean responsibility of keeping us entertained for the entire length of three hours. Lokesh hits us with one crowd-pleasing moment after another. And that’s the signal that the good part is only about to begin. “Aarambikalangala (shall we start),” says Vikram.

Just before we reach the breaking point, he hits us with the movie moment that we have been waiting for. You would properly be growing impatient in the anticipation to see what’s the deal with Vikram? What’s he gonna do now? Lokesh, however, chooses to drag the pace. There are corrupt cops, and there is another set of honest cops and then there is Santhanam and the gang chasing the trail of the treasure trove of drugs. Lokesh weaves a very convoluted chase around the missing raw material that is needed to produce drugs in the first half. And Lokesh is Kamal’s die-hard fan, so he has placed the latter on a pedestal, from where he’s calling the shots in the petty games played by the mortals.
